This self-assessment tool is designed to help internationally-educated occupational therapists understand the Canadian occupational therapy profession. It describes what occupational therapists in Canada are expected to know and do. It outlines the competencies, or knowledge and skills, that occupational therapists must have to be ready to practice in a Canadian province or territory.
The tool contains seven parts:
- Part 1 describes the responsibilities and daily experiences of working as an occupational therapist in Canada.
- Part 2 allows you to recognize your current abilities and identify areas where you may need improvement.
- Part 3 provides information to you on the registration process.
- Part 4 describes what it is like to live and work in Canada.
- Part 5 provides three case scenarios where you can apply what you have learned.
- Part 6 provides testimonials of "A Day in the Life of an Occupational Therapist."
- Part 7 provides a questionnaire for you to self-assess your knowledge and skills in relation to Canadian occupational therapy competency requirements.
This self-assessment tool is meant to be a guide for your personal use. You may find areas where you feel confident in your practice. You may also find gaps where you need additional knowledge and skills. This tool will not be used to assess your professional competency, formally. Your answers to questions will not be recorded or evaluated by anyone other than you.
